Sustainable Hemp

At Whole Circle Farms we believe that the term sustainable is used to characterize a product or to assume good stewardship of the land.

We can assure you that we want to live and farm in an environment that we can contribute to producing, protecting, and encouraging the perpetuity of our farm, and our community. The benefits of farming organically are endless. We often note that in the “olden days” all the food was produced organically. It was the norm of farming. Then as pesticides and herbicides became popular, so did oil based commercial fertilizer, and of lately GMO’s to our food system. This has allowed the organic industry to offer an alternative and became our way of life.

When we returned to Oregon in 2014 after farming in California for 21 years we explored many crops to invest in. We met with several farmers and the Oregon small farms extension and absorbed as much information as we could gather. We went to the Farmers markets, explored crops, growing seasons, water usage, and diseases. We wanted a sustainable crop and in 2015 Oregon was on the cusp of approving industrial hemp and issuing licenses. We were nervous, hesitant, and virtually ignorant of the pleasant intricacies of the magical cannabis plant. We researched endlessly and became excited by the healing properties of hemp. This plant seemed too good to be true, so we jumped in head-first and planted our first crop in 2016.
